Shinichi Urano, Ph.D., Chief Scientist
Prior to Kubisys, Dr. Urano worked for Syncsort, which he joined in
1997 in the technical services group of Syncsort’s enterprise backup
product, Backup Express. He quickly absorbed expertise in IT,
especially in networking and in the rapidly evolving field of storage. He distinguished himself as the principal problem solver, especially in
those fields where expertise needed to be gained quickly. He traveled
to provide on-site solutions at several large customer data centers
including ADP France and ABB Zurich, where he demonstrated his ability
to showcase the product in solving customers’ problems.
In 1999, Dr. Urano joined the development group of Backup Express,
where he was Senior Software Engineer. He leveraged his analytical
skills and created a proprietary language to interface the core
infrastructure of the product, enabling other developers to easily extend it in new ways. Through numerous projects, his experience spans
all phases of development, from requirement analysis and design, to
the actual implementation. Additionally, he provided technical liaison
services for their customers and corporate partners, directly helping the
product’s expansion in the market place.
Dr. Urano received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Texas A&M
University in 1996.
Richard Magahiz, Ph.D., Director of Information Technology and Quality Assurance
Richard Magahiz brings to Kubisys team a long record of hands-on
experience with innovative hardware and software built to exacting
specifications.

as a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University and at Union
College. He has published extensively in his field and has been a
member of numerous collaborations at CERN, Brookhaven National
Laboratory, and Jefferson Laboratory.
He was responsible for starting Syncsort, Inc.’s Backup Express Technical
Support group soon after the product was launched, managing both
on-call and on-site software support during a time when the customer base grew twentyfold. He later moved to the Quality Assurance group
for Backup Express and quickly put into practice automated testing and
software build validation and a cross-platform deployment strategy.
Dr. Magahiz performed his Ph.D. research in experimental particle
physics at Fermilab under the supervision of Nobel Prize-winning professor Henry W. Kendall of the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology.
