DR Planning & Tuning

Right-size your DR solution.

There are many factors to consider when selecting a DR solution, but most commonly, various production applications are separated into tiers and different DR solutions (with different RPO/RTO) are prescribed for the different tiers.

But selecting out which servers to protect for, say, a specific tier 1 application is no simple task.  One has to imagine that in the event of a disaster, only these servers will be restored initially, and make a determination that the application will function within that environment.  Typically, you are either over-paying (since you're protecting servers you don't really need), or under-protected (since you neglected to protect servers which you thought you did not need).

Thin Capture solves this dilemma because by its nature, it is conducting a mini-DR scenario each time it captures a production environment.  Thin Capture brings up a set of servers that the user has selected inside a fenced-off network bubble and the user can then quickly determine if the set of servers can constitute a functioning application environment.  With Thin Capture, you can rapidly iterate through several captures and determine the exact set of servers that is needed to restore any given application.

Furthermore, since each capture is effectively a mini-DR scenario, you can effectively determine and document all the steps necessary to bring back the production application.  Some steps which may take time to determine in the actual disaster scenario can be tested and documented, so that the business can be assured that the production applications will come back on line in a timely manner.
